The casita made up for the night: the queen bed dressed in soft blue against the red patterned tile wall, a lamp lit beside it, vigas and a wood plank ceiling overhead, and the kiva fireplace around the corner. The casita's main room: vigas and a wood plank ceiling above, a lit kiva fireplace, a sofa and a patterned wool rug, a wall-mounted television, and a tall wood cabinet with a fold-down desk and a chair along the near wall. The casita kitchen: butcher block counters, a gas range, a deep white sink under the window, copper and cast iron pans hanging from a rack, and treetops and sky through the window above the stove. The casita's deck with the outdoor kiva fireplace lit: a stuccoed hearth built into the parapet wall, a wide sky of white cloud above, and the treetops running out to the horizon beyond the wall.

The space

We built it for ourselves first

This is our favorite place to stay when it's available, which isn't often anymore.

Every square inch was worked out in advance, not to impress anyone, but so that whatever you reach for is already there. A carpenter here in town built the bed from scratch. The wood countertops are the originals, restored rather than replaced. The color came from outside: terracotta off the adobe, turquoise on the deck chairs, rust and deep blue in the rugs. Then the sheets, the mattress, the soap, the books on the shelf. None of it is filler.

What guests tell us, over and over, is how quiet it is and how finished it feels. One wrote that it was better in person than in the pictures, which is the part we worked hardest for and the part that is hardest to photograph.

  • Authentic kiva fireplaceWood-burning. Cords are stacked and ready.
  • Two queen bedsA queen bed and a queen sleeper sofa share the main room, so the casita sleeps three. Quality linens on both.

The deck

The part people write to us about

The casita sits on a hilltop, and the deck looks out over downtown Santa Fe to the mountains behind it, with nothing built in front of it. Guests mention it more than the fireplace, more than the bed, more than the walk to the Plaza. It faces both ways, so you get the sunrise and the sunset without moving a chair. The best of the evening lands in the corner.

It was built to be used, not looked at: two good umbrellas, a dining table for real dinners, a grill, a second kiva fireplace for the way the temperature drops here after dark, and string lights so the evening keeps going. And it is yours. Not a shared terrace, not a courtyard you cross to reach your own front door.

Straight talk

Exactly what you get

One queen bed and a queen sleeper sofa, in one room. There is no separate bedroom and no door that shuts between the living and sleeping areas. That is the design, not a compromise: about 700 sq ft that feels open and considered, plus a large private deck and a two-car garage of your own.

See the floor plan
Architect's floor plan of the casita: a kitchen along the left wall, one open living room with the fireplace, a bathroom and closet to the right, a foyer, and the garage beyond. About 700 square feet.
The casita, about 700 sq ft. One room, one bath, garage attached.
How the casita sits inside the compound

The Casita is Unit E, the owner's unit of the five-unit Paseo Retreat compound, and it is fully private and self-contained: your own entrance, your own driveway, your own garage, your own deck. For full accuracy, it shares one small wall with a neighboring unit, and the back deck adjoins a neighbor's deck, separated by coyote fencing and a gate. Long-term residents live in the other four units, which is what keeps the compound quiet and cared-for. We'd rather tell you exactly what you're getting.

Where you are

The last residential street you can still walk to the Plaza from

Paseo de la Cuma sits on the hill just north of downtown. Keep going south and you are into hotels and shops. Stay here and you are among neighbors, most of them long-time residents in family-owned homes, on a quiet tree-lined street. You can be in the middle of Santa Fe in ten minutes and then come back to somewhere that is not. Five minutes up the hill is the Cross of the Martyrs, a stepped walkway to a lookout over the whole city. Most visitors never find it.

  • Fort Marcy Park0.4 mi, a five minute walk. Track, playing fields, and the recreation complex next door with a gym and an indoor pool on cheap day passes.
  • The Santa Fe Plaza0.7 mi, a ten minute walk downhill through the neighborhood.
  • Canyon Road galleries1.3 mi. A half hour walk, or six minutes in the car. Parking down there is tight, so plenty of people walk it.

Flying in: Santa Fe Regional (SAF) is 13 miles and about 20 minutes by car. Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ) is 66 miles and about 70 minutes, which is longer than the hour most people plan for, so leave yourself the extra ten minutes.

Pets

Traveling with a dog?

One dog under 50 lb is welcome with advance approval, so just ask. It is $50 for the stay. There are bowls, a small bed, poop bags and wipes here already, so that is four things you do not have to pack. And then there is Frank S. Ortiz Dog Park, 138 off-leash acres five minutes away, which is one of our favorite places in Santa Fe with or without a dog.

Staying longer?

There are four more homes behind that wall.

The casita is one of five. The other four are unfurnished homes on twelve month leases, from a 414 square foot one bedroom to a 1,384 square foot two bedroom with a yard. Same compound, same walk to the Plaza, same people looking after it.

We had a wonderful stay at Andrew's Paseo Retreat! From the moment we arrived, it was clear how much thought and care he had put into creating a comfortable space. He truly is one of the most thoughtful and intentional hosts we've stayed with.

The retreat had everything we needed and so many touches that made it feel special- from bathrobes, lotion for the dry Santa Fe climate, and dog bowls for our pup Yuki, to a well-equipped kitchen with quality appliances. It felt more like staying in a thoughtfully cared-for home than a typical Airbnb.

We especially enjoyed the peaceful back deck and the convenience of having a garage. The location was perfect, close to the Plaza in a lovely, quiet neighborhood, making it easy to explore Santa Fe while still feeling relaxed. It was also a great location for us and our pup, Yuki, with Frank Ortiz Dog Park just a short drive away.

Andrew was an excellent host-kind, responsive, and genuinely caring. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

Perfect spot to stay while in Santa Fe.

Property was very comfortable and well thought out. The location was ideal,a-5 minute walk to the plaza. Everything we need for cooking was there. The deck and patio gave us a great outside place to hang out. We have stayed in several places in Santa Fe over the years, but this is our favorite.

My wife and I stayed for five nights, and we enjoyed our stay. The apartment was spotless and nicely designed. The kitchen was well appointed. The bathroom was large, and the walk-in closet was huge. Although it is a studio apartment, there was enough room for both of us to work without any issues. The Murphy bed also had a great mattress for a comfortable night's sleep. Having a garage, which was also spotless, was very nice to keep our car out of the Santa Fe sun. We have stayed at multiple Airbnb's in Santa Fe, and Andrew's place by far has the best location. It was an easy 10 minute walk to the heart of Santa Fe and the restaurants, shops and galleries. Plus, it was a less than 5 minute walk to gym that offered $5 day passes. Of course, what really makes an Airbnb stay is the host, and Andrew is fantastic. Andrew is the most communicative host we've every had at an Airbnb. He was proactive in providing information on the apartment, as well as Santa Fe. Andrew is top notch.

    Our reply

Brian, thank you so much for this. It means a lot to hear that you and your wife had such a great stay, and reviews like this are exactly why I love doing this.

I'm glad the space felt comfortable for both of you to work and relax, and that the garage came in handy for keeping the car out of the sun. The location really is one of my favorite things about the property, so it's great to hear it made getting around Santa Fe so easy.

Thank you for being such wonderful guests. You're welcome back anytime, and I hope our paths cross again soon.

  4. 5 out of 5 stars Rubel

Lovely place, great location, nice host. Well equipped with everything you need.

Though it didn't matter to us, you sleep on a double size murphy bed. Some travelers might find this uncomfortable.

    Our reply

Rubel, thank you so much for this review, and for choosing Paseo Retreat to celebrate your birthday. It meant a lot to host you both for such a special trip, and I'm so glad the location made it easy to explore Santa Fe.

One quick note on the bed: it's a custom designed and built-in Murphy bed made by a local carpenter here in Santa Fe, and it holds a full queen size mattress (not a double), chosen for comfort and the same one I use in one of my hotels. If future guests want extra plushness, I'm always happy to add a mattress topper, just ask.

Thanks again for the kind words and for taking such good care of the place. Hope to host you again!

  5. 5 out of 5 stars Glen

Great stay, super convenient location, very quiet, easy parking, nice view, what's not to like. The AC worked great and the bed was very comfy. The kitchen had every appliance imaginable, we will be back!

    Nothing.

    Our reply

Glen, thank you so much for this. We’re so glad the place delivered on quiet, convenient, and comfortable, and that your wife had a great pickleball tourney trip. It was a pleasure hosting you both (and your two pups sound like the best kind of guests too). We’d love to have you back anytime you’re in Santa Fe.

  6. 5 out of 5 stars julio

First rate, would gladly come back.

All the amenities you might need. Very well organized, with little signs to guide you in using the appliances, etc. Close to plaza and museums, but quiet and away from noise and traffic.

The description as "one bedroom" is a bit misleading, as it is organized as a studio with a Murphy bed. Space was ample so this was not a problem, but it was a surprise.

    Our reply

Thank you so much for the kind review and the 10s across the board, that means a lot. I’m really glad the space worked well for you and Santa Fe lived up to being a favorite spot.

You’re right about the “one bedroom” description, and I appreciate you flagging it. It’s actually laid out as a studio with a Murphy bed, and I’ll get the listing updated so future guests know what to expect going in.

Thanks again for staying with us, and I’d love to host you both anytime you’re back in Santa Fe.

Great place to stay and we would definitely stay again.

Andrew was super helpful on the questions we asked and addressing issues we noticed

    Our reply

Sally and Steve are the kind of guests that remind me why I love hosting. Warm, communicative, and so thoughtful. They even rolled the bins out on trash day! Their two pups were also perfect companions. Truly a joy to have you all. You’re welcome back at Paseo Retreat anytime. 🌿

Wonderful stay, and highly recommended for location, amenities, and a fantastic host!

Great location, beautiful view, super helpful and responsive host. Very clean and well equipped with thoughtful amenities.

We loved the amount of natural light that the skylights let in, but the sun comes up pretty early so sleeping much past 6:30 is a challenge.

    Our reply

Thank you so much for this review and for the kind words. I’m really glad Santa Fe lived up to the hype for your first trip, and that the space, location, and amenities all came together for you.

Good call on the skylights. They bring in beautiful morning light, but I know that can mean an early wake up call for some guests. I’ll think about how to note that for light sleepers going forward.

It was a pleasure hosting you both, and I’d love to welcome you back anytime you’re in Santa Fe again.

  2. 5 out of 5 stars Shounak

  3. 5 out of 5 stars Elizabeth Fiscus

Our host Andrew was extremely responsive and professional. We also loved the layout and the location of the unit.

    Our reply

Liz, I truly enjoyed hosting your and your husband and so glad you had an incredible experience at Paseo Retreat. You’re welcome back anytime!

  4. 5 out of 5 stars Tracy B

Andrew’s place was perfect for my husband and me, traveling with our dog. It’s very cozy, nicely decorated, clean and stocked with everything you might need. It actually seemed larger than in the photos, especially given that there’s a huge patio overlooking Santa Fe. It was quite hot when we were there, so we ended up driving more than we wanted, but it’s an easy, pleasant walk downhill to the tourist district of Santa Fe. It was also very convenient to have a garage. We’d absolutely recommend Andrew’s place to others and stay there again!

  5. 3 out of 5 stars Gins

The host was very accommodating. His recommendations for dining were excellent.

The location was great it was within three miles of everywhere we wanted to go. We ate out most days. Having the Britta water filter was brilliant. We had a lot of space to spread out.

I have mobility issues and found that my walker would not fit thru the bathroom door. The floor plan is at varying heights but the railings helped in the areas with steps. I did not know that we would be sleeping on a Murphy bed until we received the final details.

    Our reply

Thank you so much for staying at Paseo Retreat and for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful review, John!

I’m really glad the location worked so well for you and that you enjoyed the dining recommendations; that is one of my favorite parts of hosting! And yes, the Britta filter is a must

I want to sincerely apologize about the bathroom doorway and the varying floor heights. You’re absolutely right to flag that, and I appreciate you sharing it. The charm of these older Santa Fe adobe homes comes with some quirks: narrow doorways and varying floor levels are part of the original character of the property. I’m always looking for ways to improve accessibility where I can, and your feedback is really helpful there.

On the Murphy bed, I’m sorry that wasn’t clearer before arrival! I totally understand the surprise. But I promise you, this is not your normal Murphy bed I custom-built it with a local Santa Fe carpenter specifically to fit a full queen-size mattress. The mattress itself is a Silk & Snow firm foam mattress; I sleep-tested six different mattresses before choosing that one I used Silk & Snow for years in a hotel property I operated and trust them completely. I also keep mattress toppers on hand for guests who prefer something plusher. Feel free to ask next time!

Most guests actually leave the bed down the entire stay and it feels just like a regular bed. But for those who want extra space, the Murphy design lets the room double as a comfortable workspace when the bed is folded up: best of both worlds!

Thank you again for the kind words about the staff, cleanliness, and location. That really means a lot. I hope to welcome you back sometime!

    Our reply

Thank you Kaylene! You, your husband, and furry companion were truly the perfect family to host. 8. 5 out of 5 stars Nathan B

Really enjoyed our stay!!! Andrew’s place was perfect for us. The dining room doubled as a very nice additional workspace which was key for the week we were there and the view is really stunning off the back deck and from the kitchen. Definitely would book again if available on our next trip out to Santa Fe.

    Our reply

Nathan, thank you for the thoughtful review. I’m glad the dining area functioned well as a secondary workspace and that you were able to enjoy the views from the kitchen and back deck! That balance of productivity and scenery is exactly what Paseo Retreat is designed to offer.

It was a pleasure hosting you and Sarah. I’d be happy to welcome you back anytime Santa Fe calls again.

  9. 5 out of 5 stars Lefan

Great location, very cozy, has everything from spices to dryer sheets. The property also has all the appliances you could think of. The view from the patio is pretty. We had a great time with our dogs, very feels like home.

    Our reply

Lefan, thank you so much for the wonderful review. I’m really happy you, your boyfriend, and the pups had such a great stay and that the space felt like home.

At Paseo Retreat we try to create an easy, cozy landing spot in the heart of downtown Santa Fe, with the thoughtful essentials already there (from a well-stocked kitchen to simple comforts like laundry supplies) so you can settle in and actually relax. I’m glad you enjoyed the patio and the view, too.

You were fantastic guests, and you’re welcome back anytime. Happy Holidays!

Surprised, very nice, walked to plaza!

Neat, cool, property. Close to plaza. Quiet. Nice arrangement. Close to park. Place to walk dogs!! Setting on top of a hill, looking south over downtown. Fireplace inside and out. Garage.

Outside patio was shared, with one other unit. Thou, I will say we did not see anyone, else.

    Our reply

    Hi Dan,

Thank you so much for the thoughtful review. We’re so glad you and your wife enjoyed your stay, the peaceful setting, and the close proximity to the plaza and parks (always a hit with our four-legged guests!).

We’re happy to hear you found the property neat and quiet with a layout that worked well for your visit. Regarding your note about the patio, thank you for mentioning it. While it is adjacent to another outdoor area, it’s fully enclosed and separated by traditional Santa Fe-style coyote fencing to provide privacy. Many guests find it feels like their own private retreat, and we’re glad it worked well for you, too.

You were wonderful guests, and we’d be delighted to welcome you back anytime!

    Warm regards, Andrew

    Perfection!

The unit was beautifully decorated and had every amenity. The location was perfect and the back patio was perfect with a fireplace and great view.

    There was nothing to dislike.

    Our reply

    Hi Carl,

Wow! Thank you so much for your incredibly kind words and for calling your stay “perfection.” That truly means the world to us.

We poured a lot of love, intentionality, and care into creating Paseo Retreat; a space that’s not only comfortable and beautiful, but also restorative and inspiring. It brings us so much joy to hear that you felt that during your visit. I’m especially glad you enjoyed the patio and fireplace. That view is one of our favorite parts of the home too.

You were a pleasure to host, and we’d be honored to welcome you back anytime you’re in Santa Fe.

    Warmly, Andrew

We loved our stay in Santa Fe! Our airB&B made our trip truly special with a spectacular view from the patio! Lots of beautiful sunsets. Also started fires in the kiva fireplace a few nights…so cozy. Our pup was really happy; Santa Fe is VERY dog-friendly:) Andrew was the perfect host. TY!

    Enjoyed it very much!!

    Everything

Could have used a microwave and the mattress was very soft (we are old and have bad backs). Ugh

    Our reply

Hi Susan, thank you so much for staying at Paseo Retreat. I’m glad you and your husband enjoyed your time here!

I appreciate your note about the microwave and will keep that in mind for future updates. Cleanliness is something I take great pride in, and my team always works hard to make sure the unit is spotless.

I also understand mattresses can feel different for everyone, especially with back sensitivities. I chose the Silk & Snow hybrid to balance comfort for a wide range of guests, and I also have a topper available to adjust firmness if needed.

Thanks again for your kind words and for choosing Paseo Retreat. I’d be happy to welcome you back anytime.

10/21 Update: Thanks for your comment about the microwave. We’ve now added one to Paseo Retreat. Thank you!

The space is perfect for a solo traveler or couple. even though a studio, the closet and storage space was excellent..having a full garage was also a plus..the back deck has expansive views of the mountains..although the actual sun setting is a little further west of the deck , the colors of the desert and mountains were great...the neighbors are friendly..normally a Murphy bed would have a thinner mattress but there is a memory top to give a softer sleep if needed.. well outfitted kitchen..both small and large fridge..reliable wi-fi..very light and airy with plenty of windows and 3 skylights...other nice touches 2 umbrellas for guests...all in all a very complete and outfitted unit

Excellent spot in walking distance of the plaza and an adorable park with a dog park. Andrew’s attention to detail was second to none! Everything was meticulously labeled and organized. The book collection, yoga gear, and extra everyday items (lotion, dental floss, dog bed, etc) were a great touch. My pup and I loved the large outdoor patio overlooking the city and mountains. Everything was perfect! I highly recommend Andrew’s place!

Great location! We were able to walk to all the prime spots in Santa Fe, including The Plaza, The Railyard, and Canyon Road. Beautiful condo with a gorgeous view from the outdoor patio! Felt super at home, and there was plenty of space for my husband and I. It was well stocked with games, cooking appliances, washer, dryer and having a garage was super helpful. Would 100% stay here again!

Relaxing stay at the Paseo Retreat

Well equipped, from kitchen needs to washer, dryer, soap, extra blankets, pillows, a small refrigerator and a regular size fridge were available. French press, Keurig machine, milk frother a blender, toaster…they really thought of everything! Not to mention they even provided a dog bed and bowls for our pet which was previously approved as part of the visit. Place was clean, in a very safe area, proximity to parks, restaurants, the plaza, stores etc. If you stay here, choose to leave your car parked at the house and walk to the Plaza for lunch/ dinner. Save on parking and the headache of having to find parking. It is very close! Loved the natural light inside the place. I kept thinking I needed to run off the lights because the skylights were bringing in so much brightness The garage was a great perk to have because we were able to store our vehicle at night and had nothing to worry about and the car was nice and cool every time we would go somewhere. The area was very quiet, neighborhood was also very quiet at night. The neighbors were also very friendly. It felt like we lived there forever. No complaints whatsoever! The host was amazing as well and checked in throughout the time we were there for any additional needs we may have. While I did not take any pictures of the place, everything inside is exactly what you see in the photos. Spacious yet cozy, this is truly a retreat and I hope you give yourself the opportunity to enjoy. Oh and if you’re lucky, you may get to see a deer roaming around in the morning.

I can’t really think of anything.

    Our reply

Alexandra, thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed and lovely review! I’m so glad you enjoyed Paseo Retreat and you felt at home, cozy, comfortable, and welcomed. A very well appointed suite just outside Santa Fe on a short rise slope with a partial view out to valley and expansive view from large patio. Andrew is not new to hospitality, but this unit is relatively new to airbnb - some issues to work out are easily corrected, locks, access, many instructions, etc.

The walk to Santa Fe is not far, but via uninteresting back area, past abandoned church, elder center, behind a court house, back alley - then town.. It works out fine. A B&B is nearby and seemed active - people do stay along this area.

The unit is very comfortable, well designed, wrll stocked - would work very wrll for a longer stay. A short stay was a bit overwhelming with instructions, access, etc. Nice views and evenings on the porch.

I recommend the unit overall. Andrew was very responsive and professional and makes a strong host on airbnb.

Andrew's place is extremely clean, cozy, and comfortable. The Airbnb is conveniently located within walking distance of all downtown Santa Fe has to offer, but it is peaceful and quiet. The view from the back deck is very nice. Andrew has thoughtfully stocked the Airbnb with everything a guest could need. The bed is comfortable, the water pressure good, and the wifi fast. There is a small fridge in the main kitchen and a full sized one in the pantry area, where there is plenty of room for storage. Andrew was easy to communicate with, always responding in a timely manner. We will definitely try to book his place when we visit Santa Fe again.

    Our reply

Greg, thank you for such a kind and detailed review! I’m so glad you enjoyed the comfort, peaceful setting, and thoughtful touches throughout the space. It’s wonderful to hear you made good use of both kitchen areas and appreciated the views from the back deck. Hosting you was a pleasure, and I’m delighted the location worked so well for exploring Santa Fe while still offering a quiet retreat. I look forward to welcoming you back on your next visit!

Paseo Retreat is a super, nice place. I’ve been to Santa Fe many times and the home is in a great location and nice neighborhood. I always want some outdoor space and Paseo Retreat has two nice outdoor seating areas. The home is very clean and has a fully outfitted kitchen and the bathroom is quite modern and nice. The host is a good communicator and a trustworthy host. We really enjoyed our stay.

This stay was one of the most comfortable we’ve experienced through Airbnb. Andrew was very responsive to our questions, we visited many sites and restaurants upon his recommendation and were not once disappointed. My wife read a book which was thoughtfully provided on-site about local icon Georgia O’Keeffe which she really valued and which contextualized our experience at the O’Keeffe museum. Andrew went above and beyond for us and our trip was all the better for having him as our host. Talk about a beautiful property!

    Our reply

Thank you Niko! Really appreciate the review and it was a pleasure to host you. Really warms my heart when I get reviews like this.

Our stay was wonderful! The property is beautiful, comfortable, and private. We loved the large back patio with a spectacular view. Everything you can think of is here— fully stocked kitchen, extra everyday essentials, books/games, hand soap/shampoo, etc. The layout is perfect for a couple.😊 Our host was friendly, communicative, proactive, attentive, and thorough. The location is perfect. We walked to the Plaza daily. There is also a lovely walk around the neighborhood. I highly recommend!

Andrew’s place was wonderful. Great location! Walkable to town shops, cafes, galleries, and restaurants. We were on the fence about a hotel and it was much better to stay at Andrew’s, particularly in the same neighborhood and easy pull in/pull out driveway. Back deck is great for sunsets.

    An absolute pleasure

This was one of the best VRBOs we've ever stayed at. The host was very accommodating and even had a christmas tree ready when we arrived. We would have stayed 2 more weeks if we had the time. Next time we'll have to take advantage of the roof deck and fire place. Thanks so much.

Paseo Retreat is cozy, perfectly appointed, close to everything but private and peaceful. Andrew provided clear instructions and was quick to respond with assistance and recommendations when needed. Additionally, as a dog mom...it's absolutely refreshing to stay somewhere that is dog friendly and not just dog tolerant. My little buddy had as comfortable a vacation as we did! Thankyou.
